From the President

Joseph Tallarine

I hope everyone had an amazing summer.

I’m excited to tell you all that we have planned out the remainder of 2025 which includes the introduction of “The Honorable Mention Medal.”

On April 20th, 1888, the Board of Police Commissioners ordered the purchase of a dye from which bronze medals consist of and are also incorporated into the Honorable Mention award. This award was distributed from January 15th, 1889 to 1911 to members of the department who up to that time, had received Honorable Mention. The department subsequently introduced the Breast Bars in the 1900’s that are still worn to this day.

The Honor Legion was able to locate one of the original dyes for the award medal. Thanks to John Schorder, retired NYPD, and John Haul, of United Insignia for having the mold to produce this prestigious award that will be offered to members in good standing who have in the past and present been awarded Honorable Mention.

The criteria to obtain the medal will be explained on our website under our online store tab.

I would like to thank all of our members who have taken advantage of purchasing items from our online store. We will be offering another BB cap, newer golf shirt, a tee shirt, and a hoodie pullover in the near future.

I am also happy to report the Honor Legion has teamed up with TROY Industries. We will be raffling a Troy Super Grade Patrol Rifle in .556. The rifle will feature a folding stock, sling, and four 30-round magazines with the Honor Legion logo engraved on the magazine. All proceeds will go to our Widows and Children’s Fund. This rifle with all the listed components will also be available for a discounted price on our website. I encourage our members to take advantage of this unique offer that TROY Industries are extending to us.

Please note membership renewal will commence October 2025 and our Board is in the process of creating the 2026 member cards with an anticipated distribution before the new year.

As I have said in the past, it is an honor and privilege to be the President of the NYPD’s oldest fraternal organization. None of this would be possible without the help I receive from the Honor Legion Board and your continued membership!

Fraternally yours,

Joseph R. Tallarine, President

Honor Legion NYPD
